A large mug of warm hibiscus tea, flavoured with lemon and honey is just the thing when its cold outside. Brew it strong, then strain before adding lemon and honey to taste. The tea can be tart and rich in colour, with a floral aroma. Use the flowers to colour salad dressings, flavour puddings and make decadent cocktails. Steeped leaves can be strained and added to a batch of chocolate muffins for a flavour treat.

Hibiscus can help restore the appetite, and may reduce the symptoms of colds and flu, while assisting to relieve fluid retention as a diuretic. It also contains melatonin which can help to make you sleepy. Hibiscus may have a laxative effect for some people and should be avoided in large amounts and for medicinal purposes during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
